Welcome to Morton Street Legal Advisors

The complexities of running a law firm have always been challenging.  Today, the rapidly changing and unpredictable business environment, volatile recruiting and retention of attorneys and staff, and the impact of AI, among many other factors, makes it even harder.  With many years of leading and managing law firms of different sizes, MSLA offers advice and guidance on strategic planning, compensation, partnership issues, human capital, finance and operations.    We would be happy to speak with you.

Strategic Planning

A strategic plan must align with the vision, goals and desires of the partners. It must take into account an understanding of where you are, where you want to be, and the steps you need to take to get there. We have helped law firms build an initial strategic plan, including action items, that won't simply sit in a drawer. And we have worked with firms to assess where they are in the fulfillment of their plan, and to update and modify existing plans.

Space Planning and Other Operational Areas

Creating a "home" that supports your firm's image, brand and functionality is critical. Typically driven by lease expiration dates, firms must learn how to manage the process of assessing their space needs and assemblying a team early in the process. Operations encompasses all of the behind-the-scenes areas that support the attorneys in providing the best legal services. We provide help with short-term and long-term decision making to support the firms efficient and enjoyable functionality.

Finance and Compensation

If a firm does not make sufficient profits and distribute them fairly, the firm won't survive.  Creating monthly reports that are easy to understand for the partners is key.  Understanding profitability can help direct your actions to improve profits.  Creating a compensation system to distribute those profits and keep everyone happy is challenging, but achievable.  There is no one system that suits every firm; we can help firms understand all of the above and create systems that will help the firm thrive.

Human Capital

To be the best firm you need the best people; treating them well results in productive personnel. Recruiting strategies, job descriptions, and work flow management help set the tone. Effective feedback, review, compensation and benefit systems make employees feel valued. Training and professional development programs enhance retention. Aligning expectations of behavior with values and goals makes a strong team. MSLA can help you develop and implement polices that support your human capital.
